Simply hold the honing rod vertically with the tip resting firmly on a cutting board or out in front of you at a safe distance. Place the heel of the knife blade against the top of the rod. Angle the blade to roughly 15 to 20 degrees. Using light pressure (let the weight of the knife do most of the work), pull the blade down and across the rod from the heel to the tip in a smooth, continuous sweeping motion.
